Reflection exercise

Where does your confidence come from?

A quiet half hour with a notebook to notice what supports your confidence, what shakes it and what you would like to carry forward.

Confidence arrives as a blend of feelings. It rises and falls with the room we are in, the people around us and the stories we tell ourselves. When we notice what supports it, and what quietly drains it, we gain real choice about how we show up.

This exercise takes about half an hour. Find a quiet spot, take a notebook and write as it comes to you. Your own answers are the ones that count. Answer in short phrases or in full paragraphs, whichever comes naturally. Read your words back at the end, and notice anything that surprises you. You may like to return to the exercise in a month and see what has moved.

Five prompts

  1. Recall a moment when you felt completely sure of yourself. What was happening, and who was there?
  2. What do you tell yourself when your confidence dips? Write the exact words.
  3. Whose voice do those words sound like?
  4. What would you do this week if you trusted yourself a little more?
  5. What is one small step you could take in the next three days?

Confidence grows through small steps taken while still unsure. Choose one, and begin.
