When a situation feels stuck, we usually look at it from the same spot we have always stood. A small change of position can reveal what stayed out of view before. That is the heart of coaching, and you can begin it on your own.
Choose one situation that has been on your mind, perhaps a decision, a relationship at work or a goal that has stalled. Set aside half an hour, take a notebook and write freely. Describe things as they seem to you, and then try on the other viewpoints the prompts suggest. Agreement with each viewpoint is optional. Simply notice what each one shows you, and what changes in how you feel as you write.
Five prompts
- Describe the situation in three sentences, as you would tell a friend.
- How would the other person involved describe it?
- How might you see it a year from now, looking back?
- What would someone you admire notice about it?
- What option has appeared that is new to you?
A new view often brings a new choice. Notice which one is asking for your attention.
